Michael Moe is founder of GSV and GSV Asset Management. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, CEO, and Chief Investment Officer of GSV Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: GSVC) since the company’s inception in 2011. Michael conceived of GSV Capital as an opportunity for public investors to invest in late stage, high growth venture backed companies in five sectors: Education Technology, Social/Mobile, Cloud and Big Data, Marketplaces, and Sustainability. Driven by the fundamental structural change in the IPO market and in the characteristics of companies going public today, GSV Capital was the first publicly traded security enabling all investors to capture the dramatic growth and value creation taking place in the private marketplace. Additional noteworthy private investments by GSV Capital include Spotify, Snapchat, Coursera, Facebook, Course Hero, Enjoy, Palantir, Lyft, and Dropbox. Michael is regarded as one of the world’s preeminent authorities on growth investing and was the first analyst to write research on Starbucks. His insights are routinely solicited by everyone from CNBC to Barron’s to Congress. Recognized as one of the best and brightest investors on Wall Street, his honors include Institutional Investor‘s “All American” research team, The Wall Street Journal‘s “Best on the Street” award, and being named by Business Week as “one of the best stock pickers in the country.” Commencing in 1996, he began to publish a series of market-defining white papers predicting the emergence of education and talent as an investment sector. When he published his first white paper “Dawn of the Age of Knowledge” (1996) identifying the category as large, highly fragmented, and lacking in innovation, education and talent was just emerging as an investment category. His work was widely followed and catalyzed generations of innovators in the sector. He has continued to publish numerous white papers highlighting the sector over the last 19 years including “The Book of Knowledge” (1999), “The Knowledge Web” (2000) “American Revolution 2.0” (2012), and “2020 Vision: A History of the Future” (2015). He has also written extensively about investing in the emerging growth equity markets. His acclaimed 2006 book Finding the Next Starbucks: How to Identify and Invest in the Hot Stocks of Tomorrow (Penguin Group) details Michael’s investment process and philosophy which he’s refined over more than two decades in the investment community. A business best-seller, Finding the Next Starbucks has gone through three printings in five languages and been lauded for its insights into investing in premier emerging growth companies. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Coursera (Observer), Curious, GSVlabs (Co-Founder), OZY Media, Parchment (Observer), SharesPost, and StormWind. He is member of the Advisory Board at Institutional Venture Partners. Prior to starting GSV, Michael co-founded and served as chairman and CEO of ThinkEquity Partners, an asset management and investment banking firm focusing on venture capital, entrepreneurial and emerging growth companies. Before ThinkEquity, he held positions as Head of Global Growth Research at Merrill Lynch and Head of Growth Research and Strategy at Montgomery Securities.
